Lupita Tellez is our Bilingual Housing and Family Paralegal at Central WA Legal Aid. In her time at CWLA, Lupita has ensured every client feels supported, informed, and cared for throughout the legal process, while continuously working to break down barriers that often stand in the way of access, stability, and justice for the individuals and families we serve. Known for her warm and compassionate nature, Lupita creates a welcoming environment where clients feel heard, respected, and empowered during some of life’s most challenging moments.
What is your role at CWLA, and how long have you been part of the team?
I am the housing and family paralegal. I have been at CWLA since August 2024.
What drew you to Central WA Legal Aid?
I have always been interested in working for a nonprofit that assists clients with legal services, especially in family law, where there is always a high need of support.
What part of your job brings you the most pride or joy?
Helping clients who have faced barriers to obtaining legal services, such as language or transportation challenges. Many clients are unable to clearly express the assistance they need or have straightforward legal matters that remain unresolved because they cannot afford legal help. Being able to assist them with these issues helps relieve some of the stress and burden they are carrying.
What inspired you to pursue a career in legal aid, advocacy, or community service?
Because of my family background, I was always drawn to helping people feel more comfortable and at ease when they come in to meet with us. Helping clients navigate language barriers or other challenges; while also assisting with legal matters they may not otherwise be able to afford to address, is very meaningful to me.
What’s a milestone or experience that shaped who you are today?
Volunteering at different legal clinics has been a meaningful experience that shaped who I am today. It showed me that even showing up to assist in the simplest way can have a real impact on the communities we serve.
Who has been a mentor or major influence in your life?
A meaningful influence in my life has been my dad. As a farm worker who primarily spoke Spanish, he worked incredibly hard to provide for our family despite language barriers and limited resources. Watching his determination and sacrifices shaped my values and work ethic. Thanks to his support, I was able to graduate from WSU, and his example continues to motivate me to help others who are navigating similar barriers.
What do you love most about serving communities in Central Washington?
It’s rewarding to work with clients from different backgrounds, help them get through barriers, and see the relief and hope that comes when things start to get resolved.
How do you stay grounded or motivated when the work gets challenging?
I stay grounded by focusing on the impact the work has on clients, even in small moments. It helps to remember that for many people, just having someone listen, explain things clearly, or help them take the next step can make a real difference.
What’s a fun fact about you that most people don’t know?
I never learned to swim or ride a bike without training wheels.
What’s a hobby, talent, or side interest you enjoy outside of work?
A hobby of mine is road trips to go to concerts.
If you could instantly master any new skill, what would it be?
Driving stick shift or speaking a third language.

What are you excited to learn or take on in your role this year?
I’m excited to continue learning more about family law, landlord/tenant, and gaining a better understanding of how different types of cases move through the court system.
What is one hope you have for the impact of CWLA in the community?
I hope clients feel more empowered and better understand their rights, so they don’t feel backed into a corner or like they don’t have a voice. I hope people leave feeling informed, supported, and more confident in navigating their legal situations.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone entering nonprofit or legal aid work, what would it be?
Don't take client interactions personally. People are often going through a lot, and their reactions usually come from stress, fear, or frustration. Staying patient, grounded, and focused on the bigger picture helps you keep perspective and continue showing up for clients in a meaningful way.

Soy la paralegal en el área de vivienda y derecho de familia. Llevo en CWLA desde agosto de 2024.
¿Qué fue lo que le atrajo a Central WA Legal Aid?
Siempre me ha interesado trabajar para una organización sin fines de lucro que brinde asistencia legal a sus clientes, especialmente en el ámbito del derecho de familia, donde siempre existe una gran necesidad de apoyo.
¿Qué aspecto de su trabajo le produce mayor orgullo o satisfacción?
Ayudar a los clientes que han enfrentado barreras para acceder a servicios legales, tales como dificultades con el idioma o el transporte. Muchos clientes no logran expresar con claridad la asistencia que requieren, o tienen asuntos legales sencillos que permanecen sin resolver debido a que no pueden costear ayuda legal. Poder asistirles con estos problemas contribuye a aliviar parte del estrés y la carga que llevan sobre sus hombros.
¿Qué le inspiró a seguir una carrera en el ámbito de la asistencia legal, la defensa de derechos o el servicio comunitario?
Debido a mis antecedentes familiares, siempre me sentí inclinada a ayudar a las personas a sentirse más cómodas y a gusto cuando acuden a reunirse con nosotros. Ayudar a los clientes a superar las barreras idiomáticas u otros desafíos —al tiempo que les asisto con asuntos legales que, de otro modo, no podrían permitirse resolver— es algo de gran significado para mí.
¿Cuál es un hito o una experiencia que ha moldeado la persona que eres hoy?
E voluntariado en diferentes clínicas legales ha sido una experiencia significativa que ha moldeado la persona que soy hoy. Me demostró que, incluso el simple hecho de presentarse para ayudar de la manera más sencilla, puede tener un impacto real en las comunidades a las que servimos.
¿Quién ha sido un mentor o una influencia importante en tu vida?
Una influencia significativa en mi vida ha sido mi padre. Como trabajador agrícola que hablaba principalmente español, trabajó increíblemente duro para mantener a nuestra familia, a pesar de las barreras idiomáticas y los recursos limitados. Observar su determinación y sus sacrificios moldeó mis valores y mi ética de trabajo. Gracias a su apoyo, pude graduarme de WSU, y su ejemplo continúa motivándome a ayudar a otras personas que enfrentan barreras similares.
¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de servir a las comunidades del centro de Washington?
Resulta gratificante trabajar con clientes de diversos orígenes, ayudarles a superar obstáculos y ver el alivio y la esperanza que surgen cuando las cosas comienzan a resolverse.
¿Cómo mantienes la perspectiva o la motivación cuando el trabajo se vuelve desafiante?
Mantengo la perspectiva centrándome en el impacto que nuestro trabajo tiene en los clientes, incluso en los momentos más pequeños. Me ayuda recordar que, para muchas personas, el simple hecho de tener a alguien que las escuche, les explique las cosas con claridad o les ayude a dar el siguiente paso puede marcar una verdadera diferencia.
¿Cuál es un dato curioso sobre ti que la mayoría de la gente desconoce?
Nunca aprendí a nadar ni a andar en bicicleta sin ruedas de apoyo.
¿Cuál es un pasatiempo, talento o interés secundario que disfrutas fuera del trabajo?
Un pasatiempo mío es hacer viajes por carretera para asistir a conciertos.

¿Qué es lo que más te entusiasma aprender o emprender en tu puesto este año?
Me entusiasma seguir aprendiendo más sobre derecho de familia y asuntos de arrendadores y arrendatarios, así como comprender mejor cómo avanzan los distintos tipos de casos a través del sistema judicial.
¿Cuál es una de tus esperanzas respecto al impacto de CWLA en la comunidad?
Espero que los clientes se sientan más empoderados y comprendan mejor sus derechos, para que no se sientan acorralados ni sientan que carecen de voz. Espero que las personas se marchen sintiéndose informadas, respaldadas y con mayor confianza para gestionar sus situaciones legales.
Si pudieras dar un consejo a alguien que se inicia en el trabajo en organizaciones sin fines de lucro o en la asistencia legal, ¿cuál sería?
No te tomes las interacciones con los clientes como algo personal. A menudo, las personas están pasando por situaciones muy difíciles, y sus reacciones suelen derivar del estrés, el miedo o la frustración. Mantenerse paciente, centrado y enfocado en el panorama general te ayuda a conservar la perspectiva y a seguir brindando apoyo a los clientes de una manera significativa.
