Liz Gameros is our Family Paralegal and DOJ Accredited Representative at Central WA Legal Aid. In her time at CWLA, Liz has continuously worked with our clients to ensure that they are collecting the information necessary for their processes, along with assisting in filling out the necessary forms. Liz's warm and devoted approach to assist our community allows us to continue serving our community.
When we asked Liz to tell us more about herself, she said:
What is your role at CWLA, and how long have you been part of the team?
I am the DOJ Accredited Representative, Bilingual Immigration and Family Support Paralegal. It will be 2 years in July since I started at Central WA Legal Aid.
What drew you to Central WA Legal Aid?
The start to the immigration program.
What part of your job brings you the most pride or joy?
Hearing the joy in people when I tell them we have received their work permits, Permanent Residence card or Naturalization Oath Ceremonies.
What’s one thing people might be surprised to learn about the work you do?
That it is free! There are fees that need to be paid but they are to other places such as USCIS, courts, police departments, USPS etc. and thankfully we are partnered with UNA who can provide financial assistance for almost all the fees (obviously depending on income.)
What inspired you to pursue a career in legal aid, advocacy, or community service?
I always knew I wanted to help the latino community I just never imagined I could help to this extent.
What’s a milestone or experience that shaped who you are today?
Having my daughter. She has been my biggest blessing.
Who has been a mentor or major influence in your life?
My parents and my husband. I wouldn't be who I am without their love, support and patience (Extra big emphasis on patience from my husband lol)
What do you love most about serving communities in Central Washington?
I grew up in North Central WA so it means a lot to me to be able to give back to my community.
How do you stay grounded or motivated when the work gets challenging?
I don't. I find a second job 🤣
How would your coworkers describe you in three words?
Workaholic
What’s a fun fact about you that most people don’t know?
I love riding my motorcycle!!!
What’s a hobby, talent, or side interest you enjoy outside of work?
I don't have any. I keep working 😅 🙁
If you could instantly master any new skill, what would it be?
I would love to be a mechanic and fix cars.
Favorite local spot in Yakima or the surrounding area?
I don't have any. I love trying new foods so I'm typically down for anything.
Favorite comfort food?
Pho!! I love me some pho, whenever I'm sick or just not feeling like myself.
Your go-to coffee/tea order?
At Dutch I love an iced white chocolate annihilator extra sweet. When I go to other coffee shops an iced White Zombie is always a safe choice.
A book, movie, or show you always recommend?
Anything horror.
What are you excited to learn or take on in your role this year?
This year I have been given more cases that deal with Immigration Court. I am super excited to see these through as I have not been so involved in the past.
What is one hope you have for the impact of CWLA in the community?
I hope CWLA can continue to help those in need of services. Our immigration communities are being targeted, exploited and quite frankly just being taken advantage of. CWLA has been able to step in and give the communities a voice when they feel they have no rights regardless if it's immigration, tenant or family rights.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone entering nonprofit or legal aid work, what would it be?
Be patient with yourself. Some things don't give you instant gratification, and that is okay!

¿Cuál es tu función en CWLA y cuánto tiempo llevas formando parte del equipo?
Soy Representante Acreditada ante el Departamento de Justicia (DOJ) y Asistente Legal Bilingüe en las áreas de Inmigración y Apoyo Familiar. En julio se cumplirán dos años desde que comencé a trabajar en Central WA Legal Aid.
¿Qué fue lo que te atrajo a Central WA Legal Aid?
El inicio del programa de inmigración.
¿Qué aspecto de tu trabajo es el que te produce mayor orgullo o alegría?
Escuchar la alegría en la voz de las personas cuando les comunico que hemos recibido sus permisos de trabajo, sus tarjetas de Residencia Permanente o la notificación para sus ceremonias de juramento de naturalización.
¿Qué cosa sobre el trabajo que realizas podría sorprender a la gente?
¡Que es gratuito! Existen tarifas que deben pagarse, pero estas se abonan a otras entidades, tales como el USCIS, los tribunales, los departamentos de policía, el USPS, etc.; y, afortunadamente, mantenemos una colaboración con UNA, organización que puede brindar asistencia financiera para cubrir casi la totalidad de dichas tarifas(siempre, por supuesto, dependiendo del nivel de ingresos).
¿Qué te inspiró a seguir una carrera en asistencia legal, defensa de derechos o servicio comunitario?
Siempre supe que quería ayudar a la comunidad latina; simplemente nunca imaginé que podría ayudar en esta magnitud.
¿Cuál ha sido un hito o una experiencia que ha moldeado la persona que eres hoy?
El nacimiento de mi hija. Ella ha sido mi mayor bendición.
¿Quién ha sido un mentor o una influencia importante en tu vida?
Mis padres y mi esposo. No sería quien soy sin su amor, su apoyo y su paciencia (haciendo un énfasis muy especial en la paciencia de mi esposo, jajaja).
¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de servir a las comunidades del centro de Washington?
Crecí en la zona centro-norte de Washington, por lo que significa mucho para mí poder retribuir a mi comunidad.
¿Cómo logras mantenerte centrada o motivada cuando el trabajo se vuelve desafiante?
No lo hago. ¡Busco un segundo empleo! 🤣
¿Cómo te describirían tus compañeros de trabajo en tres palabras?
Adicta al trabajo.
¿Cuál es un dato curioso sobre ti que la mayoría de la gente desconoce?
¡¡¡Me encanta andar en moto!!!
¿Qué pasatiempo, talento o interés secundario disfrutas fuera del trabajo?
No tengo ninguno. Sigo trabajando 😅 🙁
Si pudieras dominar al instante cualquier nueva habilidad, ¿cuál sería?
Me encantaría ser mecánica y arreglar coches.
¿Cuál es tu lugar local favorito en Yakima o sus alrededores?
No tengo ninguno en particular. Me encanta probar comidas nuevas, así que suelo apuntarme a cualquier cosa.
¿Cuál es tu comida reconfortante favorita?
¡¡El pho!! Me fascina el pho; siempre recurro a él cuando estoy enferma o simplemente no me siento del todo bien.
¿Cuál es tu pedido habitual de café o té?
En Dutch, me encanta pedir un "Annihilator" helado de chocolate blanco, extra dulce. Cuando voy a otras cafeterías, un "White Zombie" helado siempre es una apuesta segura.
¿Algún libro, película o programa que siempre recomiendes?
Cualquier cosa del género de terror.
¿Qué te entusiasma aprender o asumir en tu rol este año?
Este año se me han asignado más casos relacionados con el Tribunal de Inmigración. Me entusiasma muchísimo llevarlos a término, ya que en el pasado no había estado tan involucrado en este ámbito.
¿Cuál es una esperanza que tienes respecto al impacto de CWLA en la comunidad?
Espero que CWLA pueda seguir ayudando a quienes necesitan servicios. Nuestras comunidades de inmigrantes están siendo señaladas, explotadas y, francamente, simplemente se están aprovechando de ellas. CWLA ha logrado intervenir y dar voz a estas comunidades cuando sienten que no tienen derechos, independientemente de si se trata de derechos de inmigración, de inquilinos o de familia.
Si pudieras dar un consejo a alguien que se inicia en el trabajo sin fines de lucro o en la asistencia legal, ¿cuál sería?
Ten paciencia contigo mismo. Algunas cosas no ofrecen una gratificación instantánea, ¡y eso está bien!
