Eilish Villa-Malone is our Bilingual Director of Immigration Legal Services at Central WA Legal Aid. In her time at CWLA, Eilish has started our immigration legal services program. Eilish has also worked to expand the work in this program by providing training for staff and volunteers to become DOJ accredited representatives. Through this process, staff and volunteers learn about different immigration forms and procedures while working on cases under her supervision.
When we asked Eilish to tell us more about herself, she said.
What is your role at CWLA, and how long have you been part of the team?
I am the Director of Immigration Legal Services at Central Washington Legal Aid. I have been a part of the team since June of 2024. In this role, I oversee all of CWLA's immigration cases; from asylum applications to family petitions, we do it all! I also oversee our amazing and growing Department of Justice Accredited Representative team, which consists of three full-time staff members and 6 part-time volunteers who are all at various stages of training. These incredible and dedicated folks assist with completing forms, applications, translations and other necessary documents for submission of immigration applications and forms of relief.
What drew you to Central WA Legal Aid?
I've been in CWLA's fold since 2019 when I was a member of the Board of Directors. I saw the important work that CWLA does in the community and fell in love with the organization. We started the immigration program in 2024 in order to meet the high need in rural Central Washington in Grant, Benton, and Franklin counties, and have since extended services to Yakima county. I love our work because we meet community members where they are and truly respond to the unique needs of immigrant and other people in Central Washington.
What part of your job brings you the most pride or joy?
I love to teach. Thus, what brings me the most joy in this work is knowing that my incredible DOJ-in-training or DOJ Reps are learning the ins and outs of immigration law. I believe that many systems, including immigration, are structured in a way that prohibit most people, and in particular, the people most impacted, from understanding them and knowing how to fight back against them. I incorporate taking control and ownership over what is meant to be inaccessible to us by taking the time to teach my team all of the skills necessary to do so. Putting power back in people's hands with knowledge is the best thing I do.
What’s one thing people might be surprised to learn about the work you do?
That our services are all free! *Subject to income guidelines.
What inspired you to pursue a career in legal aid, advocacy, or community service?
For as long as I can remember, I've always had strong senses of justice and empathy. What is wrong in this world deeply troubles me and moves me to act and always has. I remember very distinctly the sadness and anger that I felt as a child when I learned about different injustices that people suffer in our society, including those that I suffered myself. These senses mixed with my own experiences as a poor person, a survivor of domestic violence, and a member of the LGBTQI+ community. I have been very fortunate to be able to complete university and law school with a mix of luck, grit, and hard work. I also feel very fortunate to be able to serve in the way that I do and to be able to make a difference in people's lives. As I have grown as a person and intellectually, my motivations have solidified into a deep commitment to anti-racism and dismantling of white supremacy. So-- justice, empathy, anti-racism, and the dismantling of white supremacy are my guiding principles and what help me to get up and show up every day.
What’s a milestone or experience that shaped who you are today?
Having my sweet baby boy in the summer of 2024. It has been both the most challenging and rewarding ride of my life, thus far!
Who has been a mentor or major influence in your life?
I am influenced everyday by the hard-working, determined, badass BIPOC, immigrant, LGBTQI+, disabled, neurodivergent, female, and/or working-class people in my life.
What do you love most about serving communities in Central Washington?
That we are able to meet their unique needs instead of applying a uniform blanket approach to services.
How do you stay grounded or motivated when the work gets challenging?
I take time off.
How would your coworkers describe you in three words?
Observant, compassionate, and dedicated.
What’s a fun fact about you that most people don’t know?
I have 4 cats, 1 dog, 19 chickens, 1 baby, my mom, my cousin all living with me. It's a zoo.
What’s a hobby, talent, or side interest you enjoy outside of work?
Gardening.
If you could instantly master any new skill, what would it be?
Isn't part of the fun of having skills and mastering them the learning?

What are you excited to learn or take on in your role this year?
This is a trying time for immigrant people and, by extension, for the people that work hard to advocate for them. I am looking forward to surviving.
What is one hope you have for the impact of CWLA in the community?
That we can help as many people not only survive but be in a position to flourish and grow.

Always listen to community, first.

¿Cuál es tu función en CWLA y cuánto tiempo llevas formando parte del equipo?
Soy la Directora de Servicios Legales de Inmigración en Central Washington Legal Aid. Formo parte del equipo desde junio de 2024. En este cargo, superviso todos los casos de inmigración de CWLA; desde solicitudes de asilo hasta peticiones familiares, ¡lo abarcamos todo! ¿Qué fue lo que te atrajo a Central WA Legal Aid?

¿Qué aspecto de tu trabajo te produce mayor orgullo o alegría?
Me encanta enseñar. Por ello, lo que más alegría me produce en este trabajo es saber que mis increíbles representantes ante el DOJ —ya sean los que están en capacitación o los que ya están acreditados— están aprendiendo todos los pormenores de la ley de inmigración. Creo que muchos sistemas —incluido el de inmigración— están estructurados de tal manera que impiden a la mayoría de las personas —y, en particular, a aquellas que resultan más afectadas— comprenderlos y saber cómo defenderse frente a ellos. Fomento que asumamos el control y la apropiación de aquello que, en teoría, debería resultarnos inaccesible; para ello, dedico tiempo a enseñar a mi equipo todas las habilidades necesarias para lograrlo. Devolver el poder a las personas a través del conocimiento es lo mejor que hago.

¿Qué le inspiró a seguir una carrera en asistencia legal, defensa de derechos o servicio comunitario?
Desde que recuerdo, siempre he tenido un profundo sentido de la justicia y la empatía. Lo que está mal en este mundo me perturba profundamente y me impulsa a actuar; siempre ha sido así. Recuerdo con total claridad la tristeza y la ira que sentía de niña al enterarme de las diversas injusticias que sufren las personas en nuestra sociedad, incluidas aquellas que yo mismo padecí. Estos sentimientos se entremezclaron con mis propias experiencias como persona de escasos recursos, sobreviviente de violencia doméstica y miembro de la comunidad LGBTQI+. He tenido la gran fortuna de poder completar mis estudios universitarios y de derecho gracias a una combinación de suerte, tenacidad y arduo trabajo. También me siento muy afortunado de poder servir de la manera en que lo hago y de poder marcar una diferencia en la vida de las personas. A medida que he crecido tanto a nivel personal como intelectual, mis motivaciones se han consolidado en un profundo compromiso con el antirracismo y el desmantelamiento de la supremacía blanca. Así pues, la justicia, la empatía, el antirracismo y el desmantelamiento de la supremacía blanca son mis principios rectores y lo que me ayuda a levantarme y dar lo mejor de mí cada día.
¿Cuál ha sido un hito o una experiencia que ha moldeado la persona que es hoy?
El nacimiento de mi dulce hijo en el verano de 2024. ¡Hasta ahora, ha sido la travesía más desafiante y gratificante de mi vida!
¿Quién ha sido un mentor o una gran influencia en su vida?
Recibo inspiración a diario de las personas trabajadoras, decididas y extraordinarias que me rodean: personas BIPOC, inmigrantes, miembros de la comunidad LGBTQI+, personas con discapacidad, personas neurodivergentes, mujeres y/o personas de clase trabajadora.
¿Qué es lo que más le gusta de servir a las comunidades del centro de Washington?
Que somos capaces de atender sus necesidades específicas y únicas, en lugar de aplicar un enfoque de servicios uniforme y estandarizado para todos por igual.
¿Cómo logras mantener los pies en la tierra o conservar la motivación cuando el trabajo se vuelve desafiante?
Me tomo un tiempo libre.

¿Qué te entusiasma aprender o emprender en tu rol este año?
Este es un momento difícil para las personas inmigrantes y, por extensión, para quienes trabajan arduamente para abogar por ellas. Tengo la esperanza de lograr sobrevivir.
¿Cuál es una de tus esperanzas respecto al impacto de CWLA en la comunidad?
Que podamos ayudar a tantas personas como sea posible no solo a sobrevivir, sino también a estar en condiciones de prosperar y crecer.
