Quinn Dalan is our Executive Director at Central WA Legal Aid. In her time as Executive Director Quinn has grown the team from a one person staff to an eight-person team. Through her leadership she has also expanded services to in-house programs such as our family law, housing justice, and immigration legal services program, while also expanding on previously existing programs such as our pro bono program.
When we asked Quinn to tell us more about herself, she said.
What is your role at CWLA, and how long have you been part of the team?
I am the executive director, and I have been with CWLA since January 2019.
What drew you to Central WA Legal Aid?
I had previously been a volunteer attorney and a board member and every time the job came up I thought that it would be a great role - and the organization had so much potential. I have always been passionate about making sure everyone gets access to justice - even if they can't pay for attorneys.
What part of your job brings you the most pride or joy?
I love the work we do at CWLA. It's the best job ever. I think I love watching the team grow and impact more of our community and also, I love a good success story.
What’s one thing people might be surprised to learn about the work you do?
I think people are surprised about how many cases we open in any given year with such a small team.
What inspired you to pursue a career in legal aid, advocacy, or community service?
When I went to law school I thought I was going to work with domestic violence survivors in family law to make sure they were safe and protected and had their voice amplified in the legal system. I saw so many women struggle to navigate the system growing up. I ended up going into criminal law before legal aid, but the opportunity to make a difference in the community was why I was drawn to this work. I love using my law degree to change lives.
What’s a milestone or experience that shaped who you are today?
I was probably shaped by my parents' divorce and watching the court system unfold and the aftermath. The legal system can be so overwhelming.
Who has been a mentor or major influence in your life?
I have had so many incredible people invest in my life and my career - and I'm so grateful and humbled by all of their time and support. If I had to detail a specific mentor, I would say Jeff Swan (now Judge Swan). We worked against each other when I was a prosecutor, and I learned so much from just working against him (and sometimes losing). But when I did things well, he would tell me and one day when I was really discouraged about my work, he took me to coffee and told me not to give up just because there was a really hard moment. He reminded me I was a good lawyer and someone else doesn't change that. I think, especially as a very young lawyer, that was a pivotal time in my career, and it was kind of him to be so generous with his time.
What do you love most about serving communities in Central Washington?
Central WA has always been home. I grew up in Moses Lake and fell in love with Yakima in 2008 when I moved. I think this community is filled with the very best people (often forgotten by the west side) and I love using my training to help the people I call my neighbors. I can't imagine living and serving anywhere else.
How do you stay grounded or motivated when the work gets challenging?
Well, I run half marathons (very slowly) which is a nice distraction and my family keeps me busy at sports events and travel. Plus, I have really incredible friends who help me engage in joyful activities. I also think of my work as a calling - so when it gets really hard, I remind myself why I do this.
How would your coworkers describe you in three words?
Ooh. Hard one. Like how would they describe their boss? Maybe: Busy, connected and driven.
What’s a fun fact about you that most people don’t know?
I played volleyball in high school and placed 7th in the State Volleyball Tournament.
What’s a hobby, talent, or side interest you enjoy outside of work?
Well, probably my slow running, Pilates and reading books that are happy and lighthearted. Watching the Seattle Mariners.
If you could instantly master any new skill, what would it be?
I'd be able to crochet and knit really well - maybe even cross stitch.
Favorite local spot in Yakima or the surrounding area?
So many - Treveri Cellars, Provisions, Crafted, Fortuity - or tacos from Taqueria Rolly's.
Favorite comfort food?
Meatloaf and mashed potatoes or macaroni and cheese.
Your go-to coffee/tea order?
Always cold brew.
A book, movie, or show you always recommend?
I think everyone should read "What Happened to You?" by Dr. Bruce Perry and "Burnout" by Emily and Amelia Nagoski. And a third must read is "The Anxious Generation" by Jonathan Haidt. It changed how I parent.
What are you excited to learn or take on in your role this year?
I'm excited to watch this current team do really exciting things this year. I think we will impact more people than we have in years past and continue to elevate the work in the community.
What is one hope you have for the impact of CWLA in the community?
I hope that CWLA remains a trusted resource in the community and people who receive help from us feel as though we have helped and made their lives better.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone entering nonprofit or legal aid work, what would it be?
DO IT. And also, understand that just because you can't push through A-Z immediately, doesn't mean that you can't work on A and then move to B and move to C and slowly make incremental and important change in your community.

¿Cuál es tu función en CWLA y cuánto tiempo llevas formando parte del equipo?
Soy la Directora Ejecutiva y llevo en CWLA desde enero de 2019.
¿Qué fue lo que te atrajo a Central WA Legal Aid?
Anteriormente había sido abogada voluntaria y miembro de la junta directiva; cada vez que surgía la vacante para este puesto, pensaba que sería una función fantástica, y además la organización tenía un potencial enorme. Siempre me ha apasionado asegurar que todas las personas tengan acceso a la justicia, incluso si no pueden costearse los servicios de un abogado.
¿Qué aspecto de tu trabajo es el que te produce mayor orgullo o alegría?
Me encanta el trabajo que realizamos en CWLA. Es, sin duda, el mejor trabajo del mundo. Creo que lo que más disfruto es ver crecer al equipo y observar cómo logramos impactar a un sector cada vez más amplio de nuestra comunidad; además, me encantan las buenas historias de éxito.
¿Qué es algo que podría sorprender a la gente al enterarse sobre el trabajo que realizas?
Creo que a la gente le sorprende la gran cantidad de casos que abrimos en un año determinado, considerando que somos un equipo tan reducido.
¿Qué te inspiró a seguir una carrera en el ámbito de la asistencia legal, la defensa de derechos o el servicio comunitario?
Cuando cursaba la facultad de derecho, pensaba que me dedicaría a trabajar con sobrevivientes de violencia doméstica dentro del derecho de familia, con el objetivo de garantizar su seguridad y protección, y de amplificar su voz dentro del sistema legal. Al crecer, fui testigo de las dificultades que enfrentaban muchas mujeres al intentar navegar por dicho sistema. Terminé incursionando en el derecho penal antes de llegar a la asistencia legal, pero la oportunidad de generar un impacto positivo en la comunidad fue lo que me atrajo hacia este tipo de trabajo. Me apasiona utilizar mi título en derecho para transformar vidas.
¿Cuál ha sido un hito o una experiencia que haya marcado tu desarrollo y te haya convertido en la persona que eres hoy?
Probablemente, lo que más me marcó fue el divorcio de mis padres: observar cómo se desarrollaba el proceso judicial y vivir las consecuencias que este trajo consigo. El sistema legal puede resultar abrumador.
¿Quién ha sido un mentor o una influencia importante en su vida?
He tenido a muchísimas personas increíbles que han invertido en mi vida y en mi carrera; me siento sumamente agradecida y honrada por todo el tiempo y el apoyo que me han brindado. Si tuviera que mencionar a un mentor en particular, diría que Jeff Swan (ahora el juez Swan). Nos enfrentamos profesionalmente cuando yo ejercía como fiscal, y aprendí muchísimo simplemente al trabajar en su contra (y, a veces, al perder). Pero cuando hacía bien mi trabajo, él me lo hacía saber; y un día, cuando me sentía realmente desanimada con mi labor, me invitó a tomar un café y me dijo que no me rindiera solo porque estuviera atravesando un momento difícil. Me recordó que yo era una buena abogada y que la opinión de otra persona no cambiaba ese hecho. Creo que, especialmente siendo una abogada muy joven, aquel fue un momento decisivo en mi carrera, y fue muy amable de su parte ser tan generoso con su tiempo.
¿Qué es lo que más le gusta de servir a las comunidades del centro de Washington?
El centro de Washington siempre ha sido mi hogar. Crecí en Moses Lake y me enamoré de Yakima en 2008, cuando me mudé allí. Creo que esta comunidad está repleta de gente maravillosa (a menudo olvidada por quienes viven en el lado oeste del estado), y me encanta utilizar mi formación para ayudar a las personas a las que considero mis vecinos. No me imagino viviendo ni ejerciendo mi labor en ningún otro lugar.
¿Cómo logra mantener los pies en la tierra o la motivación cuando el trabajo se vuelve desafiante?
Bueno, corro medias maratones (muy despacio), lo cual supone una agradable distracción; además, mi familia me mantiene ocupada con eventos deportivos y viajes. Por si fuera poco, tengo amigos verdaderamente increíbles que me ayudan a participar en actividades que me llenan de alegría. También concibo mi trabajo como una vocación; por eso, cuando las cosas se ponen realmente difíciles, me recuerdo a mí misma el motivo por el que hago lo que hago.
¿Cómo la describirían sus compañeros de trabajo en tres palabras?
¡Uy! Esa es difícil. ¿Cómo describirían a su jefa? Quizás dirían: ocupada, bien conectada y con mucha iniciativa.
¿Cuál es un dato curioso sobre usted que la mayoría de la gente desconoce?
Jugué al voleibol durante la escuela secundaria y quedé en séptimo lugar en el Torneo Estatal de Voleibol
¿Cuál es un pasatiempo, talento o interés secundario que disfrutas fuera del trabajo?
Bueno, probablemente correr a paso lento, el Pilates y leer libros que sean alegres y desenfadados. También ver a los Seattle Mariners.
Si pudieras dominar al instante cualquier nueva habilidad, ¿cuál sería?
Sería capaz de tejer a ganchillo y con dos agujas realmente bien; tal vez incluso hacer punto de cruz.
¿Cuál es tu lugar local favorito en Yakima o sus alrededores?
Hay muchísimos: Treveri Cellars, Provisions, Crafted, Fortuity... o los tacos de Taqueria Rolly's.
¿Cuál es tu comida reconfortante favorita?
El pastel de carne con puré de papas, o los macarrones con queso.

¿Qué te entusiasma aprender o emprender en tu puesto este año?
Me entusiasma ver este equipo actual hará cosas realmente emocionantes este año. Creo que impactaremos a más personas que en años anteriores y seguiremos elevando la labor que realizamos en la comunidad.
¿Cuál es una esperanza que tienes respecto al impacto de CWLA en la comunidad?
Espero que CWLA siga siendo un recurso de confianza en la comunidad y que las personas que reciben nuestra ayuda sientan que realmente les hemos ayudado y que hemos mejorado sus vidas.
Si pudieras dar un consejo a alguien que se inicia en el trabajo sin fines de lucro o en la asistencia legal, ¿cuál sería?
¡HAZLO! Y, además, comprende que el hecho de no poder avanzar de la A a la Z de inmediato no significa que no puedas trabajar en la A, para luego pasar a la B y después a la C, generando así, poco a poco, un cambio gradual pero significativo en tu comunidad.
